The Capture of Palermo on July 22, 1943


The capture of Palermo, Sicily on July 22, 1943, by a division of Patton’s Seventh Army felt more like a liberation than a capture as seen on an image by the famous photographer Robert Capa.


Patton, in fierce competition with General Montgomery over military success celebrated his first significant victory in the Allied invasion of Sicily, codenamed Operation Husky, under the overall command of General Eisenhower.
